First EVH reference center outside US opens in Kuwait
Kuwait's largest specialist cardiothoracic hospital, Chest Diseases Hospital (CDH), has become the first Endoscopic Vessel Harvesting (EVH) reference center outside the USA. While in the US, around 90 % of vessels are harvested using EVH, the technique is not as wide-spread throughout the rest of the world.
The new reference center seeks to remedy this by offering a combination of classroom lectures and hands-on training. Maquet Middle East invited three surgeons from Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates to the first regional training, which took place between April 5 and 9, 2015. Under the lead of renowned international speakers and trainers, including the Chairman of CDH’s Cardiac Surgery Department, Dr. Tarek Aleinati, the attendees took part in daily lectures and case reviews, as well as attending coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) operations and sitting a written exam. They also received valuable opportunities to meet with the hospital’s OR teams, harvesters and doctors. The successful completion of the training event was celebrated with a gala dinner for all the surgery team at CDH, the trainers, distributors, business unit and Maquet personnel. During the gala, the highest scoring candidate in the written exam, Dr. Khaled Fouad from Egypt, was awarded for his achievement. The relevance of the new EVH reference center for the Middle East was reflected in the extensive media coverage of its opening and its first training event.
This was truly a remarkable joint effort and success by Maquet, CDH and all involved.
