Beating Heart Surgery
MAQUET has a broad range of products to support the work of cardiothoracic surgeons performing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) and other surgical procedures. Following the acquisition of Boston Scientific’s cardiac surgery businesses (including Guidant brand products), MAQUET now offers a complete line of products for cardiac revascularization, including cardiopulmonary, beating heart and endoscopic vessel harvesting products.
By providing a broad spectrum of products for optimal patient outcomes, MAQUET strives to become “The Gold Standard” in choice for cardiac surgeons.
Clampless Beating Heart Surgery
Beating heart surgery, also known as off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB), is performed without using the heart-lung machine. Instead, specialized devices are used to position the heart and stabilize the area where the surgeon is working. This allows the heart to continue beating during the surgical procedure. MAQUET’s off-pump product line enables a completely clampless approach to the CABG procedure. By eliminating use of an aortic cross clamp and a partial occlusion clamp, the risk of neurological consequences due to the release of microemboli is reduced.
Clampless Beating Heart products from MAQUET help surgeons provide optimal outcomes for high-risk CABG patients1. In November 2005, the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS) published the Beating Heart Consensus Statement that cited beating heart surgery offers distinct benefits over conventional bypass surgery, especially among high-risk patient populations.

The benefits of clampless beating heart surgery also include a quicker recovery time, decreased length of hospital stay, and less trauma that results from use of the cardiopulmonary bypass machine. These benefits are especially important for higher risk individuals who have medical conditions such as diabetes, a history of stroke, or poor physical health.
Stabilizers & Positioners
The ACROBAT Stabilizers and the XPOSE Positioning Devices are the foundation of MAQUET's beating heart product line. The ACROBAT Stabilizers use low-profile feet, FlexLink interlocking links to provide greater maneuverability and flexibility, and improved reach and access to target vessels. The XPOSE Positioners are designed to securely lift and position the heart and access target vessels, while maintaining hemodynamic stability.
Used together with MAQUET’s AccessRail sternal retractor, AXIUS Coronary Shunts, and AXIUS Blower-Mister, these products provide a complete, off-pump surgical solution.
ULTIMA OPCAB System – uniquely designed mechanical stabilizer with a rigid arm to offer mechanical stabilization of target vessels.
AXIUS Blower/Mister – provides controlled delivery of CO2 and saline to improve visibility during anastomosis in low profile, malleable shaft format.
AXIUS Coronary Shunt - designed to create a near bloodless field and provide myocardial protection during target vessel anastomosis.
Clampless Proximal Anastomosis Systems
The HEARTSTRING Proximal Seal System provides clampless hemostasis and minimizes aortic manipulation during proximal CABG anastomoses. The HEARTSTRING system allows for maximum surgical flexibility. Surgeons have the option to perform distal or proximal grafts first and to use grafts of varying lengths, hooded grafts, and angled take-offs. Surgeons use their own hand-suturing technique for creating a proximal anastamosis with either venous or arterial grafts.
Once deployed, HEARTSTRING maintains a low compliant profile for optimal hemostasis at the anastomotic site. With its elegant design and small operational footprint, there is no foreign material left inside the vessel after completion of the anastomosis. The Aortic Cutter makes a single, clean hole in the aorta for graft placement.
